Fungai is a digital storyteller who has been running web related businesses since 2000. His passion is developing news based websites and then building content and communities around them.

His first business, Venekera Works, co-founded with two friends, while he was on sabbatical from his Electrical Engineering degree program, launched in 2000 and was bought by a stock exchange listed firm in 2007.

From 2015 to 2016 he was a Nieman Journalism Fellow at Harvard University and a Nieman Berkman Klein Fellow for Journalism innovation. His work focuses on documenting the inspiring stories of strength, courage, hope and enterprise that are often overlooked around Africa.

In 2013, he took part in a three week International Visitor Leadership Program in the United States which took him and 27 other young global leaders on a tour of organisations and companies that were leading the charge in the innovative use of social media platforms.

He is the founding editor of Zimbabwe’s leading lifestyle, arts and culture website, Zimbo Jam and has developed or consulted for numerous news sites including Her Zimbabwe, Digital Stadium and Hivos.

His work with digital storytelling and related issues has seen him present at various international panels, including Creative Mornings Boston (2016), the Northeast Media Literacy Conference, Connecticut, USA (2013), Internet Governance Forum in Baku, Azerbaijan (2012), Highway Africa, South Africa (2012) and at the United Nations, Geneva (2011). As both a website and content developer he is keenly interested in the intersection of journalism, technology, civic activism and the power of the citizen.

To poison a nation, poison its stories. A demoralised nation tells demoralised stories to itself.
– Ben Okri

“The single story creates stereotypes, and the problem with stereotypes is not that they are untrue, but that they are incomplete. They make one story become the only story.”
– Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
